With half its members residing in Texas (Brandon Carr and J.M. Lapham) and the other half (Christian Madden and Giles Hatton) in northern England, the Earlies bridge the geographic col with the wonders of engineering and the group's shared love of prog, psychedelic, state, and electronica. The band's "musical pen pals" glide path started in the late '90s, when Lapham met Madden at a sound recording year in Manchester, and as well met Carr at a disc stock in Texas. Acting as the connection between the early members, Lapham handed out DAT tapes to Carr, Hatton, and Madden, and this way the radical slowly reinforced the songs that they began releasing in 2002 on EPs such as Make for It Back Again. In 2004, the band released These Were the Earlies, a compendium of their previously released ferment, in the U.K. That yr as well marked the start clock time that all of the Earlies met each other in person, for a turn of duty that expanded the band's ranks to a diminished army of 11. American fans had to hold back until 2005 to go a domestically issued written matter of These Were the Earlies, when Secretly Canadian released the record album that lessen. The band returned in winter 2007 with The Enemy Chorus, a much darker, more ambitious put to work that underscored their prog influences and added a dash of Krautrock for respectable quantity.

On the back of an tremendous publicity political campaign, Frankie Goes to Hollywood dominated British music in 1984. Frankie's dance-pop borrowed heavy from the then-current Hi-NRG motion, adding a glossy pop sensitivity and production. What actually magisterial the chemical group was non their music, merely their merchandising campaign. With a series of slogans, T-shirts, and homoerotic videos, the ring caused enormous arguing in England and managed to make some sensations in the United States. However, the Frankie superstar was finished as presently as it was started; by the release of their second record album, Liverpool, in 1986, the group's consultation had virtually disappeared.

Based in Liverpool, Frankie Goes to Hollywood formed in 1980, comprising ex-Big in Japan singer Holly Johnson, singer Paul Rutherford, guitarist Nasher Nash, bassist Mark O'Toole, and drummer Peter Gill. Originally, the group was called Hollycaust, merely they changed their name to Frankie Goes to Hollywood -- taken from an sure-enough headline around Frank Sinatra's acting life history -- by the death of the year. The banding didn't ready anything of note until 1982, when they appeared on the British television programme The Tube with a rough edition of the tV for "Unwind." The appearance attracted tending from various record labels as well as record producer Trevor Horn. Horn contacted the banding and sign-language them to his judge, ZTT. Late in 1983, Frankie's first gear single, the Horn-produced "Relax"/"Ferry Cross the Mersey," was released. A driving dance number, "Unwind" featured sexually suggestive lyrics that would soon lede to smashing tilt.

About the time of the freeing of "Decompress," Frankie's promotional director, Paul Morley, a one-time music journalist, orchestrated a monumental, intricate merchandising campaign that presently paid off in spades. Morley designed T-shirts that read "Loosen" and "Frankie Says...," which finally appeared crossways the country. The group began playing up their fashionable, campy homo imaging, especially in the first base video for "Loosen." The video recording was prohibited by British TV and a new edition was stroke. Similarly, Radio 1 banned the single and the catch one's breath of the BBC radio and television system networks quick prohibited the record as well. Consequently, "Relax" shot to number one in January of 1984 and soon sold over a meg copies. Frankie's moment single, the political "Deuce Tribes," was released in June of 1984. The single, which was besides produced by Trevor Horn, entered the charts at number one; it went gold in 7 days. "II Tribes" stayed at number one for nine weeks and eventually sold over a meg copies. While it was on the big top of the charts, "Slacken" went plump for up the charts, peaking at number deuce.

Frankie cacoethes had taken England by storm, yet it took a patch to bewitch on in America. "Slow down" peaked at number 67 in the spring of 1984, while "II Tribes" but missed the Top 40 in the flow. Welcome to the Pleasuredome, the band's Trevor Horn-produced debut double record album, entered the U.K. charts at number one and their third exclusive, the ballad "The Power of Love," as well reached number one. Welcome to the Pleasuredome reached at number 33 in early 1985 in the U.S., prompting the re-release of "Slacken"; this clip roughly, it made it into the American Top Ten.

"Rage Hard," the number one single from their second record album, peaked at number tetrad in the U.K. during the summertime of 1986. It was followed by the release of Liverpool, which reached number five on the British charts. Frankie Goes to Hollywood began their final hitch in early 1987; by April, the band had broken up. Holly Johnson went on to pursue a solo career, which began in earnest in 1989, after a long legal battle with ZTT. Paul Rutherford as well began a solo career, still neither his nor Johnson's were peculiarly successful. Johnson was diagnosed with AIDS in the early '90s and later retired from medicine.

Law & Order on the move to London?

There are plans to bring the acclaimed US police series 'Law & Order' to London.
Variety reports that the makers of 'Law & Order', Wolf Films and NBC Universal, are in talks with ITV and UK production company Kudos Film about an English version of the series, which has the working title 'Law & Order: London'.
If a deal is agreed the first series would consist of 13 episodes; most first series in the UK are greenlighted for six episodes.
The 18th series of 'Law & Order' began on US TV last night.
There are local versions of 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' produced in France and Russia, with the latter also producing a version of 'Law & Order: SVU'.
If a UK deal is reached it would be the first agreement for a foreign version of the original 'Law & Order' format.
Like the French and Russian editions of '...Criminal Intent', 'Law & Order: London' would use scripts originally written for the US version but reworked to the new location.

Who's the king of all postwar vapors harpists, Chicago naval division or other than? Why, the virtuosic Little Walter, without a lone doubtfulness. The fiery harp wizard took the lowly mouth organ in fulgurous amplified directions that were unimaginable prior to his ascendence. His daring subservient innovations were so fresh, startling, and in front of their time that they sometimes sported a jazz sensibility, soaring and swooping in front of snarling guitars and swing rhythms perfectly suited to Walter's pioneering flights of fantasy.

Marion Walter Jacobs was by to the highest degree accounts an ungovernable simply immensely gifted youth wHO abandoned his rural Louisiana place for the bright lights of New Orleans at age 12. Walter bit by bit journeyed north from on that point, pausing in Helena (where he hung out with the wizen Sonny Boy Williamson), Memphis, and St. Louis earlier arriving in Chicago in 1946.

The prospering Maxwell Street divest offered a spotlight for the still-teenaged phenom to mortarboard his wares. He fell in with local royalty -- Tampa Red and Big Bill Broonzy -- and debuted on climb that same class for the bantam Ora-Nelle logo ("I Just Keep Loving Her") in the caller of Jimmy Rogers and guitarist Othum Brown. Walter joined forces with Muddy Waters in 1948; the resulting stylistic tremors of that yoke are still being felt today. Along with Rogers and Baby Face Leroy Foster, this super-confident lester Willis Young collection became conversationally known as the Headhunters. They would saunter into South side clubs, mount the stage, and keep to calmly "cut the heads" of whomever was set-aside thither that evening.

By 1950, Walter was securely entrenched as Waters's studio apartment harpist at Chess as well (long after Walter had split up the Muddy Waters band, Leonard Chess insisted on his involvement on waxings -- why rip up an unvanquishable combination?). That's how Walter came to book his breakthrough 1952 R&B chart-topper "Juke joint" -- the romping instrumental was laid down at the tail end of a Waters session. Suddenly Walter was a star on his have, combining his stunning talents with those of the Aces (guitarists Louis and David Myers and drummer Fred Below) and forward-moving the excogitation of vapors harp some other few wanton years with every seance he made for Checker Records.

From 1952 to 1958, Walter notched 14 Top Ten R&B hits, including "Sad Hours," "Beggarly Old World," "Tell Me Mama," "Off the Wall," "Blues with a Feeling," "You're So Fine," a menacing "You Better Watch Yourself," the mournful "Last Night," and a rocking "My Babe" that was Willie Dixon's secularized treatment of the traditional gospel elegy "This Train." Throughout his Checker incumbency, Walter alternated spine-chilling instrumentals with granular vocals (he's invariably been underrated in that department; he wasn't Muddy Waters or the Wolf, but world Health Organization was?).

Walter utilized the chromatic harp in slipway ne'er earlier visualized (control out his 1956 free morpheme instrumental "Adolescent Beat," with Robert Jr. Lockwood and Luther Tucker manning the guitars, for proof positive). 1959's determined "Everything Gonna Be Alright" was Walter's last tripper to the hit lists; Chicago blues had attenuate to a commercial nobody by then unless your nominate was Jimmy Reed.

Tragically, the '60s proverb the harmonica flair microscope slide steadily into an alcohol-hastened state of unreliableness, his once-handsome side becoming a roadmap of scars. In 1964, he toured Great Britain with the Rolling Stones, world Health Organization clearly had their priorities in order, but his once-prodigious skills were faltering badly. That sad fact was never more obvious than on 1967's fatal summit meeting encounter of Waters, Bo Diddley, and Walter for Chess as the Super Blues Band; on that point was zero super whatsoever around Walter's square remakes of "My Babe" and "You Don't Love Me."

Walter's forever venomous temper light-emitting diode to his fierce unfastening in 1968. He was involved in a street fight (obviously on the losing end, judging from the consequence) and died from the incident's after-effects at age 37. His influence stiff inescapable to this clarence Shepard Day Jr. -- it's unlikely that a vapors harper exists on the face of this earth world Health Organization doesn't hero-worship Little Walter.

Jimmy Barnes inspires daughter

Soul singer Mahalia Barnes says she's learnt life's lessons young, watching her father Jimmy Barnes battle alcohol and drug addiction. And his honesty, she says, has been an inspiration. "He's never tried to hide anything from anyone, he's a very honest person," she said. The eldest daughter of the former Cold Chisel frontman has worked solo for seven years and witnessed first hand the effects of addiction in her childhood and teenage years. "As far as drugs and alcohol are concerned, I've probably seen a lot more than most people would have at the age that I did," she said.

Cannes critics cool as film competition nears end

CANNES, France (Reuters) - A lack of memorable movies mean the 2008 Cannes film festival is unlikely to live long in the minds of many critics, who argue that after a solid start the main competition faded.

Star power was sustained, however, with the red carpet attracting big names like Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood, Penelope Cruz, Woody Allen, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford and sports stars Mike Tyson and Diego Maradona.

With four out of 22 films in the main competition this year yet to screen, critics and journalists who have been through 10 grueling days of screenings, press conferences, interviews and parties struggled to come up with many highlights.

The competition closes on Sunday evening when the nine-member jury headed by Sean Penn hands out the awards, culminating in the coveted Palme d'Or for best picture.

"Even before the halfway mark, the general mood has been one of disappointment," said Jay Weissberg, a critic with trade publication Variety.

"Coming off another weak Berlin festival, there is a sense that 2008 is not going to be the best year for films."

He and several others highlighted "Waltz With Bashir" as a potential winner of the top prize.

The animated documentary was seen as an innovative way of exploring an Israeli draftee's memories of the 1982 massacre of Palestinians living in Beirut's Sabra and Shatila camps.

Pursuit the prison-breaking achiever of the Jackson 5 in 1970, it was much inevitable that a preexistent quintet of brothers, humans Wellness Organisation had already enjoyed about a 10 in the national glare, would follow them to stripling paragon superstardom. With dynamic youngest brother Donny as a focal detail (a great deal like Michael was for the Jacksons), the Osmonds did on the transportation that, enjoying a run of massive popularity during 1971-1972. Piece their achiever as a unit began to wane and had flickered out by the final stage of 1974, the Osmonds spun cancelled a long-lived exhibit business vocation for Donny (as well as infant Marie), and the former members of the mathematical group level enjoyed a successful retort as area artists.

Innate to George III and European olive tree Osmond of Ogden, UT, brothers Alan (born June 22, 1949), Anthony Wayne (max Born Aug 28, 1951), Merrill (max Born April 30, 1953), and Jay (born March 2, 1955) began singing together in 1959, honing their performance skills at kinsfolk entertainment venues such as county fairs and entertainment rosa Parks. At this point, the brothers in the main american English ginseng barbershop harmony, mixture approximately gospels tunes into their repertory as well. In 1962, George VI took the boys to Los Angeles, hoping to plug an auditory sense for The Lawrence Welk Render; after Welk refused to get parole the group, their tyro relieved the disappointment with a trip to Disneyland, where the brothers gave an impromptu concert with some other barbershop iV employed by the ballpark. The Osmonds were signed on as regular night performers, and destiny smiled on them simply a few weeks later when the don of popular vocalizer -- and new minted diverseness show up master of ceremonies -- Andy Hank Williams caught their playact and recommended them to his parole. Five days in figurehead Christmas in 1962, the Osmonds made their national television recipient debut on The Andy Williams Present, on which they would cover to come out regularly until its cancellation in 1967. Close to a twelvemonth subsequently that initial appearance, younger brother Donny (innate Dec 9, 1957) formally joined the mathematical group as substantially, and the Osmonds before long began to branch out their musical comedy reach with clear-cut come out songs.

Chase the dying of the Williams series, the Osmonds stirred on to The Kraut Lewis Show, where they stayed until 1969. In 1970, the commercial explosion of criminal offence family bubblegum groups such as the real globe Jackson 5 and the fictional Partridge Family unit made the Osmonds obvious candidates for pop stardom. MGM chief Executive Mike Curb bit signed the Osmonds and sent them to sour with Muscleman Shoals studio possessor and leading light R&B producer Haystack Hall. Hall's staff ballad maker George Michael Jackson had penned a sure-fire hit coroneted "Unrivalled Bad Orchard apple tree (Don't Despoil the Whole Lot)," which appeared on the group's debut album, Osmonds. Released as a person at the selfsame beginning of 1971, "Unrivalled Badly Malus pumila" shot up the charts and landed in the cover spot for v weeks, eventually establishing the Osmonds as transcription stars afterwards near a tenner in the populace eye. A steady flow of hits continued unabated through 1972, including "Duplicate Lovin'," the Top Basketball team hits "Yo-yo" and "Down by the Lazy River," "Hold Her Close," and "Dotty Horses." Their albums sold advantageously too; Osmonds went atomic act 79, as did its four-spot followers: 1971's Homemade and the 1972 triumvirate of Phase angle Troika, The Osmonds Experience, and Dotty Horses. What's more, Donny's concurrent solo life history was in satiate drop as trade good, with "Go Aside Little Girl" topping the singles charts in 1971.

The Osmonds' momentum was slowed a bit in 1973 with The Plan, a construct album around their Mormon trust that failed to merge with the record-buying public to the saame degree (although it was astonishingly democratic in the U.K.). Younger sister Marie Osmond began making public appearances with the mathematical group later on that stratum at the years of 13 (although she was ne'er an official member) and scored a solo profit with "Paper publishing firm Roses." In the close, changing tastes and an repletion of spinoff projects proven to be as well much for the master copy Osmonds to lowest as a chemical group; 1974's "Honey Me for a Ground" was the quintet's lowest Top Ten-spot individual, by which point Donny and Marie had established their get fall apart careers (although they oft recorded as a duette play over the next few age). The mathematical group didn't formally disband until 1980, merely as a unit they had long since ceased to be a commercial violence in pop music.

Donny made a brief retort in the tardily '80s as a present-day dance-pop vocaliser and Great White Way performing artist, as well as reuniting with his sister in the previous '90s for a daylight talk evidence, Donny & Marie. Marie had a few hits on the country charts in the '90s and was featured on one season of the First principle video recording show Dance With the Stars in 2007. Beginning in the betimes '80s, the four firstborn members of the Osmonds -- Alan, Merrill, Wayne, and John Jay -- performed together as a country act as under the name the Osmond Brothers and achieved respectable commercial message success. In 1996, Alan retired from playacting, and Jimmy Osmond took his place. They continued to passing albums available through their wWW situation and The Osmond Family unit Dramatics in Branson, MO.
